Services: Physical Therapists who work in preschool settings are responsible for monitoring children's gross motor skills. These skills include walking, running, jumping and hopping, in addition to skills which allow a child to maneuver safely throughout the school environment (i.e. walking up and down stairs, stepping over obstacles, and safely playing on playground equipment). Physical Therapy is implemented through play so that your child has fun while learning new skills to progress his/her gross motor development. We have a staff of three Physical Therapists who provide individual and group therapies in addition to classroom consultation on a weekly basis. The staff of Physical Therapists can provide you with suggestions for home activities that could enhance your child's over all development. In addition, we welcome you to observe therapy sessions at the preschool. Occupational Therapy is a profession dedicated to use purposeful activity to help your child reach his/her maximum potential in all that they do. The Occupational Therapist's primary role in a preschool setting is to assist your child to develop fine motor, pre-writing, scissor, visual motor and self-help skills necessary to show his/her Kindergarten teacher that his movement skills, both large and small, are developed and will assist him/her to learn. We have a staff of two Occupational Therapists and two certified Occupational Therapy Assistants who provide individual and group therapies in addition to classroom consultation on at least a weekly basis. The staff of Occupational Therapists are always available to answer your questions and are available to assist you. The role of the Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) is to assist your child improve his/her communication skills. In a preschool setting, the SLP will work closely with the classroom staff providing speech and language stimulation as part of your child's everyday activities. The SLP focuses on goals such as improving your child's understanding skills, expressive language skills and speech sound development. This goal is accomplished through individual, small and large group sessions. The classroom staff and SLP's use a total communication approach. This approach uses both sign language and verbalizations to enhance speech and language development. There is one Speech Therapist assigned to each classroom who provides individual and group therapy. The Speech Therapist is actively involved in all classroom activities and also provides ongoing consultation to the classroom staff. The role of the School Psychologist includes the following:
The Family Service Coordinator utilizes a multifaceted approach to fulfill those functions and activities necessary to assist and enable preschoolers and their families to obtain audible services and assistance to meet family needs:
Story Place Preschool employs a part-time Nurse Consultant who is responsible for promoting a healthy and safe environment for parents, children and the staff of the preschool. Standardized health procedures and protocols (see Health Procedures) have been implemented that are geared to maintaining a high level of health practices, and are constantly being re-evaluated to insure a maximum health promotion program. The Nurse Consultant is available for health consultation and may be reached through contacting the school.
